Understanding Resin Taxidermy Heads

Faux taxidermy heads are something else entirely, even though it is still considered an offshoot of the art of taxidermy.  These are wall mounts that have been handcrafted to resemble animal heads, but which are made from artificial materials, synthetic skins and painted faces.  Some faux taxidermy projects can actually be made with an “animal sacrifice”, meaning the taxidermist creates a cast from a dead animal’s carcass.  Some animal mounts are legitimate animal parts covered with resin and clay for effect.

However, resin taxidermy heads are something else—a crafted masterpiece designed to look like an animal’s head.  They do not involve animal hunting or the stuffing of parts, but are instead created using animal photos as inspiration and animal measurements as a guide.  The resin taxidermist then creates a sculpture of the animal along with a mount.
 
The resin designer must be familiar with the anatomy of an animal, sculpture techniques in general and perhaps painting or tanning, if the client desires those details.  However, resin heads are often sold in white colors, so that they can be used as a decorative piece in a white-themed room, so that they can match the rest of the house.  .

It is quite common to see a white deer head made of resin in many trendy interiors, as these pieces are very “in” for 2012.  Think of the advantages!  Not only are resin mounts cheaper than actual taxidermy mounts, but they are also easier to color coordinate and they are much easier to mount and work with.  Last but not least, these pieces do not contribute to animal suffering, nor will they “creep out” your guests with all that real fur and those glazed eyes.  A white deer head simply recalls the beauty of an animal form and invites conversation—it is an artwork, not an ex-animal!
